40 participants from 6 countries joined this first European meeting of the LIFE Carbon Farming project that took place from 6th to 8th November. Co-organised with APAL (Eastern Animal Production Association) and Seenorest from Eliance network, this event was an opportunity for fruitful exchanges between farmers, advisors and partners of the project.
A first conference enabled to do a synthesis on the project’s progress, with among others, a presentation of the Walloon farms involved, by Françoise Lessire and Isabelle Dufrasne from Liège University. Then, Thomas Fustier of France Carbon Agri described the current voluntary carbon market. Finally, Lucile Gérardin presented Lidl’s strategy, in relation with APAL, to reduce if GHG emissions.
On 7th and 8th November, the participants have put on their boots to visit four farms located around Nancy. At the agenda: discovery of a diversity of production systems and action plans to reduce carbon footprint of farms. Either with development of agroforestry like on the Puits Paramel farm, plantation of hedgerows and selection of hardy animals on Braquemont farm (agricultural highschool of Mirecourt), renewable energy production and increase of feed self-sufficiency on Eric Chardel’s farm, or seeding of temporary grasslands and improvement of animals comfort on Notre-Dame-des-Champs farm, the participants were able to discover a wide variety of low carbon practices.
This seminar laid the foundations for a European network gathering farmers from the six countries involved, advisors and partners of the project. The next European event will take place in Italy in autumn 2024.
