Santiago de Compostela hosts the second national meeting of the LIFE Carbon Farming project
Santiago de Compostela was chosen as the venue for the second national meeting in Spain of the LIFE Carbon Farming project, organized in collaboration with the regional partner AGACAL. The event took place on November 5 and gathered livestock representatives, technicians from Galician and other Spanish cooperatives, distributors, advisors, and researchers.
The LIFE Carbon Farming project aims to reduce carbon footprint emissions by 15% across 700 participating dairy and beef farms in six countries: Germany, Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, and Spain.
The opening address was delivered by Abelardo Nimo, director of AGACAL, followed by Matilde Moro, ASOPROVAC’s manager, who presented the project’s objectives and progress. Among the 138 Spanish farms involved, 40 Galician dairy farms are part of the initiative. Next, Roberto Jiménez, a technician from ASOPROVAC, explained the methodologies and tools used in the project to measure carbon emissions and other indicators. Jiménez detailed the calculations, databases employed, and the project’s initiatives to generate carbon credits as part of sustainability efforts, aiming to provide additional economic benefits to producers.
In the final part of the event, Adrián Botana from AGACAL joined Jiménez to showcase reports from dairy and beef farms participating in the project. Besides presenting the carbon footprint results, they discussed carbon plans being developed with farmers to reduce emissions further.
The last presentation was given by Ainhoa Rodríguez from Global Factor, another project partner. Rodríguez explained the quality criteria and pricing in carbon credit markets and outlined the future European certification framework. Following the presentations, an engaging debate ensued among the audience before the event concluded.
The following day, project members visited two dairy farms in Lalín participating in the initiative.
ASOPROVAC expressed gratitude to AGACAL for organizing the event and to all attendees for their participation and interest.
